Alaskan Malamute

By: Pleple2000, GNUTo describe Alaskan Malamutes as “family-oriented” is a serious understatement — Alaskan Malamutes LIVE for their families and experience great stress when separated either from their dog or human companions.

Originally, Malamutes were not only members of close-knit sled teams, but also of entire extended families and even communities. Malamutes are not competitive pack members, they are affectionate to everyone in their group.

Malamutes also demand affection from those outside their group (even burglars!), making them much-loved pets and horrible guard dogs. You’ll know you were missed when you come home to a relieved Malamute’s pounce + howl combination!

The list of Alaskan Malamute articles below will help familiarize you with this lovable, brute of a breed. We also have a bunch of Alaskan Malamute pictures for you - you know, to kill some time!

Malamutes love to have a job to do, especially if it involves their “pack” (be it comprised of dogs or humans). Unlike their cousin, the Siberian Husky, sledding Malamutes were built for towing, not speed. Freighting is a sport in which Malamutes continue to excel, as sled-racing teams are filling up with faster mixed-breeds.

Malamutes were bred to think independently and follow their instincts on the trail. A smart Malamute will disobey a musher’s command to go right if the safest route is to turn left. When at home, the same personality characteristics persist, making Malamutes difficult to, but still able to be, trained.
