Siberian Husky

By: Brooke Shriner, All Rights Reserved Siberian Huskies are tireless working dogs, steadfast independent thinkers, and lovable pets. Huskies have a bottomless energy reserve, and owners must be sure they get a lot of exercise. Siberian Huskies are playful and very, very friendly. Sibes have their own ideas about how the world works, and you’ll have to work very hard to train them. But the hard work does pay off!

Siberian Huskies are near and dear to the DogBreedExplorer.com staff. Together we’ve owned four Huskies…you can see two of them over in our photo gallery (the red and white and the silver and white [also pictured here…this is Laika]). In this profile (this long, long profile), we speak from both experience and research. Also, please check out Siberian Husky pictures in our gallery.

Getting to know the Siberian Husky

Sibes aren’t for everyone. Unfortunately, the Siberian Husky was bred as a working dog — any kind of selective breeding is designed to breed in desired characteristics in a given breed, and also to breed out undesirable characteristics.

In the case of the Siberian Husky, the most desirable characteristics for a sled dog do not necessarily coincide with those of a family dog: Huskies are stubborn, free-willed and high-energy dogs. This can lead to trouble for the unsuspecting new owner.

For these reasons (among others), the Siberian Husky is not necessarily the best dog for everyone. Please read as much as you can of this site and others before considering adopting or purchasing a Siberian Husky.

Of course, we do not in any way intend to discourage you from deciding to take the plunge and get yourself hip-deep in Siberians — quite the contrary, we think there’s room for a Husky in the lives of many a dog-lover.

Despite the challenges that come with Siberian Husky ownership, the benefits are remarkable. We wouldn’t trade our experience with this cheerful, hard-working breed for anything, and there are many Siberian Husky owners out there who feel exactly the same!
